If you came here looking for CSV2QBO or PDF2QBO, here is the short version: those apps still exist, but not as separate purchases. ProperSoft folded its whole line of single-purpose converters into one program called ProperConvert, sold as a subscription. So the download page you remember is gone, and the question is no longer which small app to buy, it is which converter fits the way you work now.

This page covers what changed, what ProperConvert costs today, and the practical ways to get a CSV or PDF bank statement into a .qbo file that QuickBooks will accept.

What happened to CSV2QBO and PDF2QBO

ProperSoft Inc. has sold financial file converters since 2008. For years the lineup was a shelf of narrow tools, each doing exactly one conversion: CSV2QBO, PDF2QBO, PDF2CSV, CSV2QFX, QFX2CSV, QIF2IIF, OFX2QBO, and a dozen more. You bought the one that matched your problem.

Those are now one application. ProperConvert includes every converter that used to be sold separately, runs on Windows 10 and 11 and on macOS 10.13 through macOS 26, and does all of its work locally on your machine with no upload to the cloud. If you search for the old app names today, ProperConvert is what you would actually be buying.

The pricing model changed with it. Checked in August 2026, ProperSoft lists Complete Monthly at $19.99 per month and Complete Yearly at $179.99 per year, each covering one user on one device. Team Complete is $49.98 per month or $449.97 per year for three users and devices, and Enterprise licensing is quoted on request. The free trial converts up to 10 transactions per file, which is enough to confirm QuickBooks accepts the output and not enough to finish a real month. Prices move, so check their purchase page before you buy. We keep a fuller breakdown on our ProperConvert alternative page.

Do you actually need a .qbo file?

This is the question that saves people the most money, and most comparison pages skip it.

A .qbo file is Web Connect format. QuickBooks Desktop reads it natively, as though the data came straight from a bank feed. That is genuinely useful, and nothing but a real .qbo will do the job.

QuickBooks Online is different. It imports a plain CSV with a column mapping step, and for most bookkeeping work that mapped CSV is every bit as good as a .qbo. If your books live in QuickBooks Online, Xero, Wave, or a spreadsheet, you may not need a QBO converter at all. You need a clean, correctly parsed CSV. That single distinction decides which of the options below is right for you.

Why your bank may not hand you a .qbo anymore

Part of the reason people go looking for a converter in the first place is that the direct download quietly stopped working. Intuit and the banks have been retiring the old connection methods for years, and the dates are worth knowing because they explain the gap you are trying to fill.

Chase ended Direct Connect on October 6, 2022, though it still serves Web Connect .qbo files. Discover ended QBO downloads on September 27, 2022. Bank of America went furthest: on September 30, 2025 it retired Web Connect as well, so it now offers neither .qbo nor .qfx and gives you CSV or Excel only. Schwab and PayPal have also stepped back from these formats.

So if your bank is Bank of America and your books are in QuickBooks Desktop, no download setting will produce a .qbo. Converting from the PDF statement or the CSV export is the only route left, which is exactly the job these tools exist for.

How do I convert a CSV file to QBO?

Export the transactions from your bank as CSV, open them in a converter that writes Web Connect files, set the account type and account number so QuickBooks files the transactions correctly, then save as .qbo and import it in QuickBooks Desktop under File, then Utilities, then Import, then Web Connect Files. The account number in the file has to match the account you are importing into, or QuickBooks will offer to create a new one.

How do I convert a PDF bank statement to QBO?

A PDF needs one extra step, because the transactions have to be read off the page before anything can be written. Convert the statement to clean rows first, check the parsed dates, descriptions, and amounts against the statement totals, then produce the .qbo. Skipping the check is how duplicate or shifted rows end up in a ledger, and fixing that after import takes far longer than reviewing it before.

You can do the first step here. Upload the statement to the converter at the top of this page and you will get structured Excel or CSV rows back, with dates, descriptions, debits, credits, and running balances in their own columns. From there it is either a QBO export or a mapped CSV import, depending on which QuickBooks you use. Our guide to the bank statement QBO format explains what QuickBooks expects inside the file if you want to understand what you are producing.

Is there a free CSV2QBO converter?

Not in any form worth relying on for client work. ProperConvert has a trial capped at 10 transactions per exported file, and the free tools that turn up in search results are usually either demo-limited in the same way or unmaintained. Treat anything that asks you to upload statements without a stated retention policy with real caution, since these files carry account numbers and full transaction histories.

Which converter should you pick?

Match the tool to your destination and the answer usually falls out on its own.

Pick ProperConvert if your accounting lives in QuickBooks Desktop or Quicken and you need native QBO, QFX, QIF, or IIF output. Local processing also settles the question for firms whose policy is that client data never leaves the building, and at $19.99 a month for one machine it is inexpensive. The catch is the per device license and the install, which is a wall on a Chromebook or a locked-down work laptop.

Pick a browser converter if the destination is a spreadsheet, QuickBooks Online, or Xero, if statements arrive as scans and phone photos, or if more than one person needs to work through the same backlog. You convert from any operating system, the seat follows the login instead of the machine, and you can judge a full conversion before paying. We compare the two approaches in detail on the ProperSoft alternative page, and our roundup of the best bank statement converter software weighs the wider field on accuracy and price.

Whichever you choose, the work does not end at the import. Once the transactions are sitting in QuickBooks, matching them against the bank feed and clearing the differences is the part that actually closes the month, and automated account reconciliation is worth a look if that step is where your evenings go. If you need to move data the other way, out of a .qbo file and into a spreadsheet for review, the QBO to CSV converter handles that direction.

Moving off the old ProperSoft apps

If you still have a working copy of CSV2QBO or PDF2QBO installed, there is no urgency to change anything. Old licensed installs keep running. The decision only arrives when you get a new computer, when the app stops opening on a newer macOS, or when a second person needs to do the same job. At that point you are choosing between a ProperConvert subscription and a browser tool, and the honest deciding question is the one from earlier: do you genuinely need a .qbo file, or do you need clean, accurate rows? Answer that first and the rest is straightforward.
