If you want to convert PDFs to Excel and you refuse to rent your software, the honest shortlist in 2026 is short: Tungsten Power PDF at $129 or $179, and Able2Extract Professional at $199.95. Both are genuine one time perpetual licenses. Adobe Acrobat is subscription only. And none of the three will hand you a bank statement as a reconciled register, which is the specific reason most people are reading this page.

The perpetual license shortlist, with what you actually pay

Prices below are the US list prices published by each vendor as of September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a one time price, this table says so rather than guessing.

SoftwareOne time priceWhat the license coversOngoing cost
Tungsten Power PDF Standard (formerly Kofax)$129One machine, Windows 8.1 to 11None required. 90 days of support included, maintenance contract optional after that
Tungsten Power PDF Advanced$179One machine, adds full OCR, batch processing, Bates numbering, redactionSame as Standard
Tungsten Power PDF for Mac$129One machine, macOS 10.15 and later, licensed separately from WindowsSame as Standard
Able2Extract Professional$199.95Lifetime single user license, full usage rightsNone required. Optional Software Advantage Plan at $49.95 per year adds priority support and new releases
Adobe Acrobat StandardNot offeredSubscription only$12.99 per month on an annual plan
Adobe Acrobat ProNot offeredSubscription only$19.99 per month on an annual plan
ABBYY FineReader PDFNot publishedThe ABBYY pricing page lists annual subscription tiers rather than a one time priceAnnual subscription, quoted per region
Excel Power QueryAlready ownedIncluded in the Excel you haveNone

Two of those rows deserve a footnote. Able2Extract also sells a $49.95 thirty day license with no automatic renewal, which is a sensible way to handle a single project without committing to $199.95. And Tungsten runs a 30 day money back guarantee on individual Standard and Advanced licenses bought directly from its own store, which does not necessarily travel with a license bought through a reseller.

Why finance teams still insist on a perpetual license

The reason is rarely that subscriptions are more expensive over five years, because sometimes they are not. It is usually one of four things. Capital budgets approve a one time purchase far more easily than a recurring line item that has to be re-justified every year. Firms doing litigation support or forensic work need to reopen a matter years later using the same software version that produced the original export. Air gapped and heavily restricted machines cannot phone home to validate a subscription. And nobody wants a tool that stops opening files the month a card expires.

That last point is the real argument for perpetual. A subscription PDF editor that lapses takes your ability to edit with it. A perpetual license keeps working on the version you bought, forever, whether or not you ever pay the vendor again.

Kofax is now Tungsten Automation, and it matters for what you buy

Kofax renamed itself Tungsten Automation on 16 January 2024, so you will find the same product sold as Kofax Power PDF and Tungsten Power PDF depending on the reseller. Version numbers and license keys carried across. Power PDF itself is very much still sold.

What did not survive is the enterprise capture line. Kofax Capture and Kofax Transformation Modules are marked discontinued, with no Capture 12 planned. Capture 11.1 moved into Limited Support on 3 March 2026 and reaches End of Support on 3 March 2027, and Tungsten is directing those customers to TotalAgility. If someone on your team suggested running statements through Kofax Capture, that timeline is the first thing to check. Our Kofax Power PDF alternative comparison goes through the whole product line and where each piece lands for statement work.

Where all of them fall down on a bank statement

Every product above can turn a PDF page into a spreadsheet. None of them turns a bank statement into a ledger, and the difference is not cosmetic.

A PDF to Excel converter is trying to reproduce what the page looks like. It puts text where the text was. A bank statement needs the opposite job done: throw the layout away and recover the transaction register underneath it. So you get dates as text rather than dates, a single amount column where the bank printed withdrawals and deposits in two, descriptions that wrapped onto a second line split into extra rows, page headers and running footers landing in the middle of the data, and every page exported with its own column widths so the pages do not line up when you stack them.

Tungsten has been fixing this class of problem inside the product for years. The release notes for Power PDF Advanced 5.0.0.1, built 12 August 2022, list issue 1838073 as: after converting PDF file to Excel, some columns merged and did not align properly. That fix helped. It did not change the fact that a statement layout puts the description column right next to the amount column, which is exactly where column detection struggles.

The most expensive failure is the quiet one. Nothing in any of these tools checks that the transactions you extracted add up to the closing balance the bank printed. A dropped row or a misread digit produces a file that looks perfectly fine and only reveals itself weeks later when a reconciliation will not close.

What to do if the documents are bank statements

Buy the perpetual PDF editor for what it is genuinely good at. Power PDF Advanced at $179 is strong value for redaction, Bates numbering, form work and general document assembly, and if you compare it against renting Adobe Acrobat at $19.99 a month it pays for itself inside a year. Able2Extract Professional is the more table focused of the two and lets you define column boundaries manually, which is real work but does produce a better sheet than a blind export. ABBYY FineReader has the strongest OCR of the group if scanned documents dominate your workload.

Then handle statements with something built for statements. Converting a bank statement to Excel here reads the document as a ledger: it identifies the transaction rows, normalizes dates into real dates, signs each amount by direction, rejoins descriptions that wrapped, stitches every page into one continuous register and checks the running balance against the closing figure the bank printed. Output is XLSX or CSV, plus QBO, OFX, QFX or QIF if the destination is accounting software rather than a spreadsheet. Once the register is clean, producing the month end reporting on top of it, including a board ready profit and loss and balance sheet, becomes a formatting exercise instead of a data recovery project.

The combination most firms land on is a perpetual PDF editor for documents and a purpose built converter for statements. That is not vendor diplomacy, it is just two different jobs.

Is there a one time purchase PDF to Excel converter?

Yes, two credible ones. Tungsten Power PDF sells Standard at $129 and Advanced at $179 as perpetual licenses covering one machine each, and Able2Extract Professional sells a lifetime single user license at $199.95. Both convert PDFs to Excel with no recurring fee. Neither produces a reconciled bank statement register, which is a separate capability.

Does Adobe Acrobat have a perpetual license?

Not any more. Acrobat is sold as a subscription: Standard at $12.99 per month and Pro at $19.99 per month on annual plans. Older boxed versions such as Acrobat 2020 still run on machines that have them, but Adobe no longer sells a new perpetual desktop license through its normal channels, so a one time purchase shortlist in 2026 does not include Acrobat.

Is Kofax Power PDF a one time purchase?

Yes, for the desktop editions. Power PDF Standard, Advanced and the Mac build are perpetual licenses: you pay once and keep using the version you bought, with no monthly or annual fee. Each license covers one machine. Power PDF Business is the exception, sold by quote with a five user minimum and available on subscription or term licensing.

How much is Able2Extract Professional?

The perpetual license is $199.95 for a lifetime single user license with full usage rights. There is also a $49.95 thirty day license with no automatic renewal for one off projects. The optional Software Advantage Plan costs $49.95 per year and adds priority support, free access to new releases and a support portal, but the software works without it.

Can Excel convert a PDF bank statement without extra software?

It can try. Excel Power Query has a Get Data from PDF connector that reads tables directly, and for a clean single page statement it sometimes works well. On real statements it typically returns several candidate tables per page, splits or merges the description and amount columns, drags headers and footers into the data, and gives you no signed amounts and no balance check. Power Query is free and worth ten minutes before you spend anything.

Which PDF to Excel software is best for bank statements?

For general PDF work with occasional statement conversion, Power PDF Advanced at $179 is the best value perpetual option, and Able2Extract Professional at $199.95 is better if you want manual control over column boundaries. For statements as a routine workload, neither is the right tool, because both give you a picture of the page rather than a register with signed amounts and a balance that ties out. Use a purpose built statement converter for that and keep the perpetual editor for everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kofax Capture still supported?
