ABBYY has one of the best OCR engines ever built, and that is not in dispute here. The mismatch is that recognizing characters accurately is only the first half of converting a bank statement, and it is the easier half.
FineReader will read the digits on a scanned statement correctly. Whether those digits land in the right column, on the right row, with the right sign, is a separate problem, and it is the one that decides whether the closing balance foots.
Export a statement to XLSX and you generally get the page reproduced in cells: repeated headers, wrapped descriptions as extra rows, summary boxes mixed into the transaction list. Accurate characters, unusable structure.

ABBYY FineReader can OCR a scanned bank statement and export it to XLSX, and the character recognition is excellent. What arrives in Excel is usually the page layout rebuilt in cells rather than a clean transaction table, so headers repeat, wrapped descriptions become extra rows, and the balance column drifts. Recognition breadth and quality. FineReader handles a very wide range of languages and scripts, reads poor scans and historical documents better than most engines, produces properly searchable PDFs, and does document comparison and PDF editing alongside OCR. If you digitize mixed paper archives, work across languages, or need one desktop application that both reads and edits documents, it earns its license fee and there is no reason to look elsewhere.
On the enterprise side, Vantage is a serious capture platform with pre-trained skills, human-in-the-loop validation, and real integration options. For an organization processing a continuous stream of documents from many senders, that architecture is correct, and a focused converter is not a substitute for it.
It helps to separate the two halves of the problem. Recognition asks what characters are on this page. Reconstruction asks which of those characters form a transaction, where one row ends and the next begins, and which number is a balance rather than an amount. General OCR solves the first half brilliantly and leaves the second to whatever export template you pick.
Bank statements make reconstruction unusually hard. There are often no gridlines, so columns are defined by whitespace alone. A long merchant description wraps to a second printed line that belongs to the row above it. Debits and credits appear in separate columns at one bank, in a single column with parentheses at another, and with DR and CR suffixes at a third. Account headers and balance summaries repeat on every page. Software that knows those patterns per institution produces a sheet that foots. Software that does not produces a very accurate picture of a statement.
Whatever tool you use, run the same test. Count the transaction rows in the output and compare against the PDF. Add the opening balance to the sum of all amounts and see whether it equals the closing balance on the last page. Then look at whether debits and credits carry the same sign convention on page one and page nine. An extraction that passes all three is finished. One that fails any of them is a spreadsheet you still have to audit by hand.
Once the data ties out, the useful work starts: categorize the transactions, reconcile against your books, or push a ledger file straight into accounting software. Ask what your document problem actually is. If it is many kinds of documents, in several languages, arriving continuously, ABBYY is the right class of product and the only question is which edition. If it is bank statements, arriving in batches, ending in a spreadsheet that has to reconcile, a converter tuned to statements gets you there today with nothing to install and nothing to configure. Both answers are defensible. Only one of them is cheap to test.
