Short answer: yes. Coinbase can export your activity as a CSV directly, and it can also generate a statement as HTML, PDF, or CSV under Settings, then Accounts, then Statements. The catch is that a CSV export only helps if you still have the login and the account is open. If you were handed a PDF statement, or the account is closed, convert the Coinbase statement PDF to Excel or CSV instead and you get the same rows without a login.
Where Coinbase statements and exports live
On desktop, select your profile icon, then Settings, then Accounts, then Statements. On the mobile app, open the main menu and choose Account and settings, then Statements. From there you can download a statement that already exists, or build a custom one by choosing the asset, the transaction type, and the date range, picking HTML, PDF, or CSV, and selecting Generate.
That single screen is doing two different jobs, which is where most of the confusion comes from. A CSV statement is a data file for a spreadsheet or tax software. A PDF statement is a document, the version people save to Drive, email to their accountant, and attach to a workpaper.
Which format should you pick?
| Format | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| CSV | Loading into Excel, Google Sheets, or crypto tax software | Only covers the account you are logged into, for the range you pick |
| Sending to a CPA, attaching to a return, or an audit file | Will not paste into a spreadsheet as rows without converting it | |
| HTML | Quick reading in a browser | Rarely what anyone downstream asks for |
If you have the login and just want the numbers, take the CSV. Everything below is about the cases where that is not enough, which in practice is most professional work.
Why the CSV export is often not the whole story
Coinbase is not one product. The main exchange account covers simple buys, sells, converts, sends, receives, and rewards. Advanced Trade fills are order level and are pulled separately. Coinbase Wallet is self custody, so that activity lives on chain and Coinbase does not issue a statement for it at all. A single CSV from the main account is complete only if the main account is all the client ever used, and it usually is not.
Ask which products were used before you treat any export as final. Then merge the records rather than assuming one file covers the year.
How do I export my full Coinbase transaction history?
Generate a statement for every period you held the account, with the transaction type filter set to all, and repeat it for each product you used. For the deepest export, Coinbase also offers a full data download under Settings, then Privacy and security, which returns machine readable files covering your activity. If the account is closed or restricted, none of this is available, and any PDF you saved earlier becomes the record.
How do I convert a Coinbase statement PDF to Excel?
Upload the statement PDF to a converter and each line becomes a spreadsheet row with the date, transaction type, asset, quantity, spot price, USD subtotal, fee, and total in their own columns. Upload twelve monthly statements at once and they merge into a single sheet in date order. That takes under a minute and needs no exchange login, which matters when you are working from what a client forwarded.
The columns that matter for tax work
Whatever route you take, check that four things survived into the spreadsheet before you start calculating.
- Asset and quantity as separate fields. If the coin symbol and the amount are fused into one string, you cannot sum BTC apart from ETH.
- The fee in its own column. Fees on a purchase generally add to cost basis and fees on a sale generally reduce proceeds, so folding them into the total hides the adjustment.
- The spot price at the time. Without it you cannot reconstruct the USD value of a convert or a reward.
- Signed amounts. Money in and money out have to carry different signs, or the column totals to nonsense.
Why old statements still matter after Form 1099-DA
Coinbase issues Form 1099-DA to US customers. For tax year 2025 it reports gross proceeds to the IRS, with cost basis shown to you but not filed. From tax year 2026 the form also reports cost basis, so the IRS can compare your reported gain against the broker number.
The limitation is what a broker can know. Coinbase can only report basis for assets bought and held on its own platform, and it is not required to track basis for crypto purchased before January 1, 2026. Anything transferred in from another wallet or exchange arrives with nothing attached. So a 2025 sale of coins bought in 2019 can show up as proceeds with no basis behind it, and documenting the purchase is on you. Going back through old statements and building one spreadsheet is the practical way to do that, and it is a lot easier than reconstructing it from memory during an examination.
Matching exchange activity to the bank
Dollars move both ways between a bank account and an exchange, and a clean set of books shows both sides. Every USD deposit into Coinbase should have a matching ACH debit on the bank statement, and every withdrawal a matching credit. Converting the bank side too, so both sit in the same format, turns that from a squinting exercise into a lookup. If your books live in a spreadsheet rather than accounting software, you can get the bank statement into Google Sheets and match the two sheets side by side.
Once the rows are in, tagging them is the next step. The converter can categorize transactions from a bank statement so exchange transfers, business income, and personal spending are separated before anything reaches a return. For a business that took payment in crypto and needs the activity in its books, exporting a CSV and running it through a tool that turns it into an importable QuickBooks file saves a manual entry pass.
Can I get a Coinbase statement for a closed account?
Not reliably. Once an account is closed or restricted, you may lose access to the statement generator entirely, and support cannot always recover history for you. This is the strongest argument for downloading a statement for every year while you still can. A saved PDF converts into a usable spreadsheet years later. An account you can no longer log into does not.
A practical order of operations
For a tax year, work in this order and you will not have to redo anything.
- List every product the client used: main Coinbase account, Advanced Trade, Coinbase Wallet, and any other exchange.
- Pull a statement or export for each, covering the full year, with no transaction type filter applied.
- Convert anything that arrived as a PDF so every source ends up in the same column layout.
- Merge into one sheet, sort by asset then date, and confirm the row count and totals tie to each source.
- Compare total proceeds against Form 1099-DA and write down the reason for any difference.
The differences are usually explainable: a transfer that moved coins without a sale, a reward recorded at a different spot price, or activity from a product the 1099 does not cover. Documenting them at the time is far cheaper than reconstructing the reasoning a year later.
If you also hold stocks
Most people with an exchange account have a brokerage account too, and the same problem shows up there: the statement is a PDF and the export is either slow or incomplete. The Robinhood statement converter and the general brokerage statement to Excel converter produce the same structured rows, so a full year of investing activity can live in one workbook regardless of which platform it came from. Preparers handling several clients at once will want the converter built for tax preparers.
