BMO Digital Banking will show you activity on screen and hand you a statement PDF, but a PDF is not a spreadsheet and the online export window does not reach back far. Upload the BMO statement above and download a clean XLSX or CSV with dates, descriptions, signed amounts and the running balance in their own columns. Start free, no credit card.

Upload the BMO statement PDF to BankXLSX and choose XLSX or CSV as the download format. Every transaction comes out as a row with the posting date, description, a signed amount and the running balance in separate columns, ready to sort, filter or pivot. It works on BMO personal checking and savings, BMO business checking, and legacy Bank of the West statements, including months the online export no longer reaches and accounts that have since been closed.
BMO Bank N.A., the former BMO Harris, is one of the largest banks in the US Midwest and, since it absorbed Bank of the West in 2023, a business bank with a coast-to-coast footprint. Its statements are clean documents and terrible data. Here is where the friction shows up.
Copy a page of BMO transactions into Excel and the columns collapse into one, the amounts land as text, and multi-line descriptions break across rows.
When BMO moved customers onto its Digital Banking platform, connections into accounting software dropped and pre-migration activity did not follow the rebuilt link. The statements are still the only complete record of that period.
Online activity export covers a recent window. Statement PDFs go back much further, which is exactly why year-end and multi-year work runs through the PDFs.
Accounts carried over from the Bank of the West acquisition often have history split across two platforms, and the older side usually exists only as saved statements.
Raw activity exports commonly drop the running balance column. Without it you cannot prove the converted rows tie to the statement, which auditors and lenders do check.
A client forwards a statement, not banking credentials. There is nothing to export from that side of the email, and no reason to hand out a bank login.
Upload the official statement and get back a structured table that reconciles to the statement balance, with no retyping and nothing to install.
Posting date, description, amount and running balance each land in their own column, with multi-line descriptions joined back into a single field.
The balance column is carried through, so you can prove the converted rows tie to the closing balance printed on the statement.
BMO personal checking, savings and business checking layouts parse correctly, and so do carried-over Bank of the West statements.
A saved or requested PDF is enough. No login, no open account and no working connection, which is how the pre-migration months come back.
Drop a year of statements in one batch and get a single continuous sheet instead of twelve files to stitch together.
256-bit encryption in transit, and you can delete uploaded statements whenever you want.
No software to install and no credit card to start.
In BMO Digital Banking, open the account and download the monthly statement from the documents area. A statement a client forwarded works just as well.
Tip: Several months in one upload is fine.
Drag the files into the box above. Once the transactions are read, pick XLSX for a workbook or CSV for an import. QBO, OFX and QFX sit next to them.
Tip: Pick QBO if the target is QuickBooks.
Check the last balance in the sheet against the closing balance on the statement before you build anything on top of the data.
Tip: A match proves nothing was dropped.
BMO runs deep in Midwest business banking and, since Bank of the West, across the West Coast too. The people converting its statements are usually building something the bank portal will not produce: a year of categorized spend, a lender package, or a cleanup covering months the feed never carried.
Turn a forwarded BMO statement into a coded spreadsheet without waiting for the client to repair a dropped Digital Banking connection.
Rebuild a full year of activity for a return or a review, including the pre-migration months the rebuilt feed never reached.
Get BMO business checking activity into a spreadsheet for a loan application, a budget, or a year-end close.
Load BMO and legacy Bank of the West history into a model for audit support, with the running balance intact.
Separate rent deposits from operating costs across BMO accounts for a Schedule E or an owner statement.
Work from the official statement, not a portal export, when the record has to stand up to scrutiny.
BMO Digital Banking lets you download recent account activity, and it keeps statement PDFs available for far longer than the activity export reaches. That gap is the whole problem. The export handles this month and last month; the work that actually needs a spreadsheet, a tax year, a loan package, a cleanup that starts eighteen months back, sits outside it. Converting the statement PDFs closes the gap and has the added benefit of producing rows that match the official document line for line, which a portal export does not always do.
| Route | What it needs | History reach | Running balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online activity download | Your own BMO login | A recent window only | Often dropped |
| Accounting software feed | A live, reauthorized connection | Forward from the connect date | No |
| Retyping the PDF | Hours, and a tolerance for typos | Anything you hold | If you type it |
| Converted statement PDF | The PDF, nothing else | Every statement you hold or request | Yes |
If the months you need are inside the download window and you have the login, use the bank export: it is free and first party. The conversion route earns its place everywhere else, and the platform migration created a lot of those cases.
When BMO retired the old BMO Harris systems and moved customers to BMO Digital Banking, existing connections into accounting software stopped importing and had to be authorized again. A reauthorized connection starts from that date, it does not backfill. Businesses with years of feed history watched the new link begin empty, and the only complete record of the earlier period is the statements themselves.
Yes. BMO completed its acquisition of Bank of the West in 2023 and converted those customers onto BMO systems. Statements issued under either brand convert the same way, because the input is the document rather than a live connection. That matters for multi-year work, where a single client file often spans both.
Posting date, description, a signed amount where debits are negative and credits positive, and the running balance. From there the usual next steps are ordinary spreadsheet work: a pivot by month, a category column, or a subtotal by vendor. If you would rather have the rows coded before you start, categorizing transactions from a bank statement covers the rule-based approach, and bank statement reconciliation covers the tie-out against the statement balance.
A spreadsheet is not always the destination. The same upload produces a Web Connect file for QuickBooks through the BMO statement to QBO converter, and the step-by-step version is in how to import BMO transactions into QuickBooks. For Xero, the Xero bank statement converter outputs Xero's expected columns. If your file is a card statement rather than a bank statement, the credit card CSV export columns reference explains what each issuer gives you and how the layouts differ. The general bank statement PDF to Excel converter and the main bank statement converter handle every other institution with the same output layout.
Most BMO business clients hold accounts elsewhere too. Statements from Chase, Bank of America and U.S. Bank come out in the same column layout, so a multi-bank month closes in one sheet rather than four. Bookkeepers running this at volume usually work from the bookkeeper workflow, and when the finished CSV needs to become a QuickBooks Desktop import, a dedicated CSV to QBO converter does that last step.
Download the statement PDF from BMO Digital Banking, upload it above, and choose XLSX or CSV. Each transaction becomes a row with the posting date, description, signed amount and running balance in their own columns, so the sheet ties back to the closing balance on the statement.
BMO Digital Banking lets you download recent account activity, but that window is much shorter than the period statement PDFs cover, and the export often drops the running balance. For a tax year, a loan package, or any multi-month work, converting the statement PDFs is the more complete route.
Yes. BMO personal checking, personal savings and business checking statements all parse, including multi-page statements and statements carrying analysis fees. Business accounts are the most common use, since that is where the year-end and lender work concentrates.
Yes. BMO Bank N.A. is the former BMO Harris, and BMO completed its acquisition of Bank of the West in 2023. Statements issued under any of those brands convert the same way, because the converter reads the document rather than connecting to an account.
The move to BMO Digital Banking dropped existing connections, which had to be removed and authorized again. A rebuilt connection imports forward from the day it was authorized and does not backfill, so the pre-migration months have to come from the statements.
Yes, as long as you have the PDF. Nothing about the conversion touches your bank, so a saved statement or one requested from BMO is enough. This is the usual route for estate work, audits and cleanups on accounts nobody can sign into anymore.
Statements contain account numbers, so treat them carefully. BankXLSX encrypts uploads with 256-bit encryption, never resells or shares your financial data, and lets you delete uploaded files whenever you want. Check your firm policy before uploading client documents.
Yes. Upload a batch of statement PDFs and they come back as one continuous sheet in date order rather than one file per month. That is the fastest way to build a full year for a return, a cleanup, or a lender package.
The same statement as a QuickBooks Web Connect file.
The same output layout for any bank.
The multi-client workflow.
